EMMA GREDE PORTRAITS for CFDA INNOVATION AWARD

This past week Emma and I have joined forces again to document a huge moment in her career. During Monday night’s 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards, alongside Kim Kardashian and the Skims brand CEO Jens Grede, Emma received the Innovation Award! I was happy to document her preparations for Vanity Fair while getting ready at one of New York City’s most classic hotels.

One of the challenges of the getting ready shoots is always timing. Even though we strategize what kind of portraits we want to get before hand, between hair and make up, getting dressed, finalizing the speech and rushing out to the location, there are often just a few moments to get the shots.

I achieved this look using available light and on camera flash. My workhorse Canon 5DMKIV and a 600EXII allowed me to be mobile and think fast. Capture One on the software edit helped me stay organized, efficient and create the exact color I wanted.

Next getting ready session I’d like to have a small space for a proper portrait sitting. I’ll create a small studio and bring it to the hotel or place we are putting the red carpet look together!

BILLY PORTER for MERCEDES BENZ by ANDREW DAY

I was asked to create portraits of Billy Porter and 11 “Everyday Cinderella’s” in collboration with Mercedes-Benz and Refinery29. Produced by VICE in promotion with Billy's role in the new Cinderella movie, starring Camila Cabello. For this production, XR Technology was used - which combined real-and-virtual combined environments and human-machine interactions. With this technology the production was able to shoot locations and interactions with environments that related to the Cinderella movie and locations all over New York City.

“Billy Porter extends his dream-making duties offscreen as he hosts the "Dressed for a Dream" livestream created in partnership between Refinery29 and Mercedes-Benz, in which 11 "everyday Ellas" are swept off the street and onto the runway. Ahead of his appearance at the fantasy fashion event of the year, Refinery29 sat down with Porter to talk clothes as armor, his personal fairy godmothers, and how to remind yourself of your own power when you're dealing with evil stepsisters (or the equivalent).”

Lighting the new men's collection for David Yurman

When I was asked to send my work to be considered for the new David Yurman catalog, I was very excited! Normally, my moody imagery is what I create for portrait clients, so I was happy to go into this direction for such an established jewelry brand.

One of the challenges of this shoot was the lighting. The David Yurman team gave me some references that showed sunlight over the model’s shoulder. Since we didn’t have access to natural light, I achieved this look using strobe light and a careful selection of modifiers. It was also important to me to keep a gentle baroque mood overall and allow the jewelry to be top of mind.

I love bringing my creative voice together with a client’s vision. Check out the results on David Yurman’s website and my latest blog post below.

I made the lighting design for David Yurman’s latest men’s jewelry catalog with all Profoto lights and modifiers. I was able to make the look of high sun light coming in over male model Paul Kelly’s shoulder and dialed it in to bring the mood to focus on the jewelry.

The Giant White Umbrella 210cm helped with the soft fill light. They don’t make it anymore! But I would love to see it come back for sale. It’s Especially popular with fashion shooters, the Profoto Giant Umbrella is a unique 7' light shaper that's eminently portable and easy to set up and break down. The white version is ideal in situations that require maximum softness without hot spots with a neutral color rendition.. Both 1/3 and 1 stop front diffusion fabrics are available for extra softness. I used the 1 stop dif.

For set design I chose a beautiful Oliphant Backdrop. While Capture One Pro 22 helped us dial in the color style in the new Canon R5 mirrorless 45 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor. With 1,053 Automatic AF zones, it is easier to get the sharpest focus on the jewelry to make it the center of attention.

The first image below is my lighting test, which is a little bit more raw and closer to my natural portrait style. I included it simply because I love it! In the images after, you can see we dialed in the highlights and fill light for a more elevated look and focus on the jewelry pieces.

The Sustainable Style Challenge for Luméra Magazine with Georgia Gibbs

For this shoot we did a sustainable style challenge where we dove into Georgia’s wardrobe to find her favorite sustainable and rising brands. She told us how she would put the schedule for drops from Havre Studio, a rising brand in her calendar and I can see why. There are some great unisex / Men’s shirts too that I’m very excited to be able to shop! Maybe more of a men’s line in the future!?

Finding the time to make portraits like these during golden hour is worth the wait.

AIRE ANCIENT BATHS by ANDREW DAY

For this incredible interiors location in New York City, accomplished by astounding architects, We dove deep underground, into the bedrock of Manhattan for the luxury bath house’s new campaign imagery! I got the call for this still life job when I was in Europe last year. Together with the art director, we looked at the new features of the spa and built a timeline to capture the spaces without taking valuable time from the day to day business. I provided oversight and creative input to the post production of the images. I used my own experiences at the spa to translate the color and mood of the images and provide quality control to the lab work. I love being with a job all the way through from concept to production, lab to completion.

PRAKTI BEAUTY by ANDREW DAY

For this skincare campaign with an Ayurvedic core, I directed and photographed the talent working with the entire collection of products for Prakti Beauty’s launch!

We shot the stills and video in a lighting setup that was designed for changing cameras rather than the entire lighting setup. This approach allowed us to create stills and video that have the same “DNA”.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER by ANDREW DAY

Hello! I hope you’ve had a great start to the year and ready for spring weather soon!

I wanted to share one of my favorite shoots of the past year with you. Working alongside one of my favorite Art Directors, Jon Dinapoli, this shoot with Sarah Jessica Parker was something my younger self never thought I would be doing.

For this production we focused on creating streamlined stills and video for SJ to use across channels for three of her brands: for fragrance, shoes and wine.

Are you wondering how you can streamline your video and still shoots this year? I’d love to know more about what challenges you face and help you through it!

ACTRESS AMANDA DIFELICE by ANDREW DAY

Amanda came to the studio for portraits to take on her acting auditions. Understanding it’s important to show that she was someone that could communicate in front of a camera in a way that showed depth and experience, we got to work!

I provided her with a mood board to ensure we were on the same page creatively. Next, I coordinated a team to pull great fashion styling and hair and makeup.

A look back at the Met Gala... Victoria's Secret x Met Gala by ANDREW DAY

This was the first Met Gala for Victoria’s Secret and many of the guests we photographed — so incredible to share this moment with everyone!

I love shooting high stakes portraits on the go. With a great team in place coordinating timing, styling, arrivals and departures — it feels like a breeze!

PRITIKA SWARUP for MODERN LUXURY'S OCEAN DRIVE - By ANDREW DAY

With an intimate-sized crew and creative freedom, I went into the studio to photograph a 10 page fashion story with entrepreneur and inspiring fashion star, Pritika Swarup for Modern Luxury. Keep an eye out for more collaborations between Pritika and myself, including her Ayurvedic skin care line!

ABOUTYOU.DE / ADIDAS Fashion Week in BERLIN by ANDREW DAY

Andrew Day was exclusively brought to the brands TWEEZERMAN (beauty tools), HelloBody (facial care) and Banana Beauty (make-up) to the AYFW and was responsible for photographing product placement on site.

Authentic integration was very important to us in everything captured. All make-up artists were therefore trained intensively on the products in advance. The artists worked backstage exclusively with the partner products. Thus, the benefits of the products could be presented to the press directly in the application behind the scenes.

CONTENT CREATION

For the beauty partners, I traveled from New York to Berlin to shoot high-quality content around the products together with selected models.

ATHENA WILSON for L'OFFICIEL MONTE CARLO by ANDREW DAY

This past Fall in 2020, I photographed ATHENA WILSON for L’Officiel Monte Carlo wearing Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren. We were operating with a passionate team under COVID guidelines. I thought Athena had a great smile and a big personality, so it was meaningful for me to use the equipment as set elements for a hint of “movie glamour” that I though embraced her charm.

DEAWY SKINCARE LAUNCH

A New Skincare Concept and Shoot by Sarah Frankenhauser + Andrew Day

Screen Shot 2020-10-19 at 7.46.02 PM.png

The Opportunity

Amidst the height of the pandemic, Deawy Skincare reached out to myself and Creative Director, Sarah Frankenhauser to concept and create for the organic skincare brand’s introduction to the world.

Due to COVID guidelines, the production’s footprint was limited to 8 people with virtual attendance spanning from New York to Germany.

Before the shoot, Sarah and I sat down with Deawy founders Julia Ruiz and Diana Hoover to learn about their product launch. They wanted to portray their skincare in a natural way on Kadeem and Stassy, a real life couple.

“THE FOCUS IS ON THEIR NATURAL CHEMISTRY, THE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER. INTERACTION WILL PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE WHILE PORTRAYING THE BRAND’S FIVE INITIAL PRODUCTS.“ - Sarah

The Concept

We followed up with a complete “concept to capture” book by Sarah, that reached from mood boards, color-scheme, backdrop planning, styling, hair and make up, references to our detailed shot list (thank you to our producer Amanda Huffman). We planned every single visual aspect in a 20 page book.

“STARTING A SHOOT WITH A CLEAR IDEA OF THE VISUAL OUTCOME AND TIMELINE COMPLETELY CHANGES THE ENVIRONMENT ON SET. IT CREATES A PROJECT THAT IS STRONG ALL THE WAY TO THE FINISH” - Andrew

NEW FACES FRIDAY - 8/28/2020

Last week I was back in the studio meeting inspiring people who are getting back to the grind in NYC. Listening to everyone’s stories and the way they have handled the last 6 months was a very therapeutic process. It’s really cool to have the chance to appreciate conversation with a real person in front of you.

I’m really trying to take this time (an opportunity, really) to develop an exchange between my subjects and me into something more meaningful. There’s parts of it that feel like I’m getting ahead. I realize this is a good chance to fight for the future.

Here’s to finding a new path forward and being determined to create with purpose.

GOSEE FRIDAY - AUGUST 2020

Once a month, I meet with faces across the industry in search of inspiring people and their stories. Here are top picks of personalties and unique people.

This gosee took place pre-COVID — but now that day to day life is slowly resuming, I will be sharing socially-distant gosees and inspiring people!

This month’s talent comes from Wilhelmina Models. Special Thanks to Stephanie Clark.
